It is a self-portrait looking at the painful struggle of having braces during the peak years of adulthood. Some themes it represents are the strain of public embarassment, pain, self-consciousness, and discomfort. The trapping of the mouth in braces and thread illustrates the constant barriers to beauty and self-love imposed by standards of society.
